The Windautal is a side valley in the Brixental , stretching some 16 km over Westendorf and a part of Hopfgarten.
In the South the valley ajoins the borders of the province of Salzburg - accessible via the peak of the Filzenscharte. Hikers, cyclists and mountain bikers, as well as ski tourers in winter, are treated to a number of exciting touring possibilities.
Imposing peaks and popular places to visit for both locals and guests are the
Steinbergstein (2.215 m), the Kröndlhorn (2.444 m) and the Brechhorn (2.032 m).
The Windauer Ache flows down the valley, eventially joining up with the Brixentaler Ache. This river not only makes the walks and cycle rides through the valley more scenic, it is also very popular for rafting expeditions. (difficulty level WW II to WW V)
The Salzburg-Tiroler-railway weaves its way uphill, through a number of tunnels, through the lower (northern side) of the Windautal. On the north eastern side of the valley stands the "Windau" station. The so-called "Windauer Schleife", higher ground in the valley, that takes full advantage of the valley's beauty, is a great spot for railway photography.
