Signposting & Grades of difficulty
Similarly to the ski pistes, there is a system of grading according to difficulty on official mountain bike routes, which is then displayed on the route signposts. The grading of difficult also helps when choosing routes and the correct equipment.
The guidelines according to which the difficulty of mountain bike routes are graded, is neither law nor regulation, but based on the standards laid down by the regional government, and is shown in grades of blue, red, black and yellow.
Blue routes: easy
Family-friendly route, also possible with normal bicycles, with good, even surfaces (fine grit or tarmac). Climb and descent gradients between 0% and 5% , and for short distances at a maximum of 10%. No continuous climbs. Free of or with very little motor traffic. There are no particularly dangerous areas along the route, and any possible danger spots are clearly signposted.
Red routes: moderate
For sporty cycling abilities and defensive cycling.
The use of mountain bikes is recommended. Climb and descent gradients of between 5% and 12%, short distances to a maximum of 17%. There is the possibility of stetches of route with many visible bends, and also motor vehicles can be expected on some tracks.

The trail design, in particular the consistency of the surface, drainage system, closure barriers, safety features (eg. missing railings and fences) and danger warnings, are set up to accomodate vehicles such as tractors and HGVs. Features such as these are potentially hazardous for cyclists.

Be aware that the routes may be closed at any time due to operational reasons (eg. tree felling and transport), in places where farm and forest goods are stored, where vehicles and machinery are parked, and also due to dangers caused by natural occurences. Steep terrain around the route is not secured.
Black routes: difficult
Difficult and challenging MTB-trails with many danger points, beyond the difficulty of the red routes, making these tracks even more difficult. Mountain bike equipment is obligatory, and consciencious careful cycling is necessary.
Single trail: extremely difficult
Extreme and challenging routes, with no possible access to motor vehicles. Typical mountainous trails with all possible mountain dangers. Falls are possible and terrain is in no way made safe. Very steep. Obstacles such as steps, tree roots, and rock boulders are likely. In part, dismount may be necessary, depending on ability. Due to weather conditions these trails are often made very difficult to pass.
